Urban Ministry Opportunities

Grace Place School has several available full time and/or part time urban ministry opportunities.

If you have a heart and calling to minister to at risk teens, becoming part of our Grace Place family may be the place for you. We minister to vulnerable and exploited youth ages 13 – 18 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. As a missionary with Grace Place School, you will participate in the work of providing hope, education, direction, and the relevant love of God to teens who are at risk of recruitment into gangs, sex trafficking, prostitution, crime, and other unhealthy lifestyles. 

Ministry Positions Available

ACADEMIC INSTRUCTORS:

Design and implement direct creative instruction to enhance learning. Impart knowledge while winning and maintaining the interest of learners of all types.  Mentor and tutor students in taking the next steps to meet their short and long term educational goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Able to think “out of the box” and help students creatively sprout their wings.
  • Ability to see winners and potential in all students and be able to inspire them to become who God made them to be.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess student academic and behavioral needs and design instruction to achieve success.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide structure and discipline in the midst of a creative learning environment.
  • Work well with a team of volunteers.
  • Possession of a current teaching License is a plus, but not required.

LIFE/EMPLOYMENT SKILLS INSTRUCTOR:

Train students to excel in areas that will help them to gain and maintain gainful employment and to be successful in managing life skills.

QUALIFICATIONS – Possess the ability to teach and train in the following areas:

  • Job skills needed to be successful on a job
  • Life Skills – budgeting, financial management, relationships, etc.
  • Career Exploration and Entrepreneurship
  • Job Coaching for Acquisition and Retention of Employment
  • On the Job Experience with a GPS associated business

JOB COACH:

Work with students to obtain and retain gainful employment. Develop partnerships with local businesses. Conduct regular on the job visits to troubleshoot and be a support for the student and their employer.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to make connections with neighborhood businesses that are willing to partner with us in hiring and training students.
  • Discernment and ability to give constructive feedback to students on how to improve job performance.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of current job openings in areas that the students can easily access through the bus or other means of transportation.  Familiar with online application processes.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPER:

Work with students to research and develop small business enterprises that will serve as on the job training for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability in starting successful and sustainable small business enterprises.
  • Ability to teach students key elements of the process from research to business plans to implementation.
  • Ability to acquire funders for the start up of the business and design a proven financial sustainability plan.

BUSINESS/ENTERPRISE MANAGER:

Manage the day to day operations for the Grace Place enterprise which includes managing the budget, the student employees, hiring, firing, and customer satisfaction.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing a small business.
  • Ability to treat students and customers in a manner to promote success yet in a firm and loving manner.
  • Training students in various aspects of running the business.
  • Patience in dealing with student employees who have little experience.
  • Ability to manage the budget and ordering in an effective manner.
  • Honest and demonstrates integrity in business dealings.

CREATIVE ARTS COORDINATOR/TEACHER:

Create and manage an effective program for students incorporating several artistic forms.

QUALIFICATIONS – Possess the ability to teach and/or acquire volunteer teachers in one or more of the following areas:

  • Photo Journalism
  • Music/Art/Drama/Dance/Set and Costume Design
  • Web Design/Computer
  • Public Speaking
  • Carpentry/Automotive
  • Culinary
  • Interior Design
  • Clothing Design/Sewing
  • Foreign Languages
  • Sports

GENERAL ASSISTANT:

Help with many aspects of the program. Assist the teachers, coordinators, etc. Help with food prep, transportation, and overall supervision. Contribute your specific skills and talents to the program.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A servant’s heart and lots of energy to provide positive and upbeat supervision as needed.
  • Ability to foresee potential problems and the ability to diffuse negative behaviors.
  • Must demonstrate patience and teachability to learn to discipline with love.
  • Possess a current driver’s license.
  • A teachable spirit.

MARKETING DESIGNER
AND COORDINATOR:

You will create and manage effective marketing materials and campaigns for print, emails, and social media.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Talent as a creative thinker and designer while displaying the ability to work well with others in the creative process.
  • Knowledge and tools of effective marketing, social media, and online fundraising opportunities is necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability at writing copy for newsletters, website, and campaign materials.

COUNSELOR:

You will provide individual and family counseling from a Biblical worldview and the Word of God and prayer as the foundation of strategies and action plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to “speak the truth in love” with discernment and always acknowledging that God knows each client intimately and we do not have all the answers.
  • Skilled at helping others apply the truth of God’s word and love to their practical struggles.
  • Professional experience in trauma counseling and/or life coaching a plus.

DONOR DEVELOPER/EVENT PLANNER:

Assist in the acquisition of funds to expand and maintain the ministry of Grace Place through direct donor contact and fundraising events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability in fund raising.
  • Ability to promote the ministry of Grace Place with accuracy and appeal.
  • Follow a strategic Fund Raising Plan.
  • Experience in event planning and ability to recruit and manage needed volunteers for events.
  • Demonstrate creativity in developing new promotional events.
  • Grant finding and grant writing ability is a plus.

Urban Ministry Details

Statement of Faith and Background Check:
Grace Place School is a faith based, Christ centered school, therefore it is required that all missionaries agree to our statement of Christian faith and live a lifestyle in step with that faith statement.  Candidates selected for an assignment will need to pass a Level 2 security background check prior to acceptance.

Age:
Missionaries must be at least 20 years old. Retired teachers and professionals are also encouraged to apply.

Length of Commitment:
Due to the necessity of gaining trust with vulnerable youth which can only be gained over time, the ideal length of missionary service is 6 -12 months. We take applications throughout the year.

Expenses:
These positions are unpaid. Missionaries need to raise support for their wages and expenses through their church and/or Reliant Ministries in Orlando with whom we have an active partnership.

Housing:
If needed, GPS will assist missionaries from out of town secure suitable housing near the school.  When possible, renting a place with one or more roommates is advised in order to decrease expenses.
