Program Descriptions
Academic
Our programs offer job skills training and entrepreneurship in a creative and innovative fashion. Utilizing instructors from the business community, the students are taught principles in finance, career preparation, and entrepreneurship. Instruction and practice in resume writing, interview techniques, and effective communication to train students in skills that are vital for job seekers, especially teens as they try to secure their first jobs. Students are also trained in “soft” employability skills such as time management, being an effective team player, attitude, and appearance. Each day, the students earn an incentive wage, based on how they meet the goals in the soft skill areas. Their ability to earn money proves to be highly motivating, but also affords opportunities to learn skills such as savings, cashing checks, budgeting to plan ahead for needs.
Small Business Development
Students will learn the concepts, benefits, and techniques of starting their own business and/or marketing new ideas and inventions. Some students will have the opportunity to be involved in helping to create and start a micro business such as designing t-shirts, creating an ice cream vendor truck, landscaping business, etc. For viable business ideas, outside investors will be sought to own and fund the start-up of the businesses.
The students will also be given opportunity to be employed at the business to obtain on the job experience if they have demonstrated growth and potential during their completion of 10 weeks of our Job Skills Class. Through being involved in these businesses, the students will learn and use many academic and life skills such as math, money and people management, creative design, working with county government agencies, and dealing with the public and other employees. These will equip them with employable skills and work experience to help them gain financial independence and stability.
